Some of our favorite neighborhoods to explore is Fort Greene (never heard about ir, right?!), Carroll Gardens and the &#8220;distant lands&#8221; of artsy <a href=\"https:\/\/www.behindthescenesnyc.com\/fine-raw-chocolate-factory-bushwick\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Bushwick<\/a>!<\/p>\n<p>Each neighborhood has its own unique pulse, and discovering them at a relaxed pace can make you feel like you\u2019ve lived here forever. Ain\u2019t nothing like knowing which block\u2019s got the best bagels or where the local jazz band plays on Tuesday nights.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>Become a Subway Savant<\/h3>\n<p>The subway is the lifeblood of New Yorkers. Instead of hailing a cabbie or Uber, get yourself a OMNY card (the new version of the nostalgic NYC Metro Card), download a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.culturelookingsideways.com\/subway-civility-intro\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">subway<\/a> map, and start hopping on trains. Peak hours can be a bit wild, but it\u2019s all part of the experience.<\/p>\n<p>Once you master standing without holding on, congratulations\u2014you\u2019re basically a local! You can start your day with a bagel and lox from Russ &amp; Daughters (a classic!) with some schmear, slurp some delicious ramen from Ippudo (the most famous ramen in the country), or enjoy a classic slice at Joe\u2019s Pizza (famous and loved by locals, even though it became known worldwide for appearing in movies like Spiderman).<\/p>\n<p>But, for the true local experience, try places like Williamsburg&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.behindthescenesnyc.com\/beco-bar-where-the-cool-brazilian-crowd-hangs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Beco Bar<\/a> (a neighborhood favorite), Sunday in Brooklyn (a great start in exploring the area), Walter&#8217;s in Fort Green (tip: ask to go into their speakeasy Karasu \u2013 a Japanese izakaya) and and 2 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.behindthescenesnyc.com\/5-top-vegan-restaurants-in-nyc-hidden-gems\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Vegan restaurants<\/a> we completely adore: Seasoned Vegan in Harlem (amazing story and an opportunity to explore Harlem) and the refined Avant Garden in the West Village. Our list is endless, but these are good to start!<\/p>\n<p>Food trucks are another must-try; they\u2019re like the street food soul of the city. Dip your toe into an array of cultures right from the curb\u2014every corner\u2019s got a story and a snack to die for.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>Attend Local Events<\/h3>\n<p>Stop frontin\u2019 and swap overpriced attractions for local happenings. The city\u2019s parks, community theaters, and even college campuses host amazing events. Ever been to Shakespeare in the Park (a bit touristy still, but a great experience) or a jazz night at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.behindthescenesnyc.com\/discovering-hidden-gems-things-to-do-in-new-york-city\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Smalls<\/a>? Chelsea Market, Artists &amp; Fleas, and Brooklyn Flea are brimming with unique finds. Shopping here supports local talent and scores you some cool, one-of-a-kind items to take back home. You\u2019ll be cutting a rug with the hip and happening crowd, dressing up straight from the urban dictionary of style.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>Finding Your Beehive<\/h3>\n<p>Well, if you really want to stay like a New Yorker, you should probably book yourself into a 700-square-foot apartment with three roommates and one window. But because you want the dream New York, it\u2019s best to consider your stay at a boutique hotel in neighborhoods like Williamsburg, Soho, or the Upper West Side.<\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wbaltv.com\/article\/airbnb-limits-some-new-reservations-in-new-york-city\/45037799\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Airbnb in NYC<\/a> have now new limitations and regulations, so be sure to check for ones that have city approval.
